Edzell

Manach Hill and Tornarock – These two Tumps were located west of Fettercairn and north of the B966 road to Edzell. I left my car on an area of grass in the small hamlet of Kirkton of Balfour then walked north-west along a vehicle track to and through the Wood of Balfour. On emerging from the trees I followed a dilapidated fence south-west across heather onto Manach Hill where there was a cairn which was probably higher than the nearby boundary stone.

I then returned to the col with Tornarock and continued north-east along the fence line and through some long heather as I climbed this hill. There was a cairn at the top but possibly an area of heather was slightly higher. I headed back to the col and returned to Kirkton of Balfour by the upward route.

Hill of Edzell – I parked off-road to the north of Edzell and Serjan Hill and walked through the trees to a muddy track which later joined the one coming up from the farm. This track was followed west to an area of forest which had been harvested. Gates had been installed in a new deer fence and this led to a vehicle track which continued south-west. West of the felled trees I walked up the side of a fence, crossed a stile, went through some heather, to reach the trig point marking the summit of this Tump. The return was by the upward route.

The Crannel: I then drove a short distance north-west to the end of the unclassified road at Meikle Tullo Farm where I obtained permission to park. I then walked round the farm to join a tarred then later a hard core road heading north-west then north. This led through a few gates to installations belonging to Scottish Water and here I left the track and crossed heather to reach the trig point marking the summit of this Tump. It was very windy here so I about turned and descended south-east to the wind turbines later rejoining the vehicle track to return to the start by the approach route.

Drummore Hill: This deleted Tump was located west of Edzell. I parked beside the cemetery to the south of Drummore Hill and walked briefly east to a gate giving access to a grassy field. Once across it and a second gate I entered a wooded area. It was then a fairly steep climb to the summit of Drummore Hill which was unmarked. The return was slightly north-east of the ascent route to later rejoin the approach route and return to the start.
