This was our first day staying at The Lodge at Doune on the Knoydart Peninsula accessed only by boat or on foot. The forecast for the week wasn’t great and with poor weather predicted for our first outing it was decided to tackle the Corbett, Buidhe Bheinn from Loch Hourn.
We were conveyed by boat up Loch Hourn then landed by dingy on the north shore east of the waterfall at Torr a’Chiot. From there we climbed steeply through rough ground then accompanied by one of the party took a slight diversion to climb the Tump, Glac nan Sgaden. Thereafter a fairly steep descent took us to the vehicle track beside the pylons where we re-grouped. We then headed up the path for Buidhe Bheinn and into the cloud.
At the top end of the path we climbed onto the north-west ridge of Buidhe Bheinn and to its West Top. (Corbett Top) The ridge then narrowed as we headed for and reached the summit of Buidhe Bheinn which was marked by a cairn and where the rain turned to snow. There was no point in hanging around so we returned to the West Top where on this occasion I visited its cairn before returning to Torr a’Chiot by-passing the summit of Glac nan Sgaden.
- Time taken – 6 hours.
- Distance 9.25 kilometres.
