Aberdeenshire

The first Tump was Elphin Hill located north of Ellon. I parked at the side of the minor road to the north beside the access track to Elphin Cottage. I then walked south along this track but beyond the cottage the track became muddy then overgrown with gorse bushes. I therefore entered and crossed a couple of fields to the summit tor.

To the north-west of the above hill was the Tump, Carding Hill. I left my car near the old railway line to the south-west of the summit, walked briefly along this line before crossing the access road to Arnage Castle and a stock fence. I thereafter walked through a field of neeps and into a small wood to locate the summit tor.

To the west of Carding Hill was the Tump, Hill of Drumwhindle. I parked at the side of the minor road to the north then entered and crossed a stubble field to reach a stone dyke where the summit trig point was located.

The next hill I planned to climb was north-east of Ellon and the first hill I climbed that day. I left my car on the minor road to the south of Hill of Dudwick and walked along the track towards Sunnyside Farm. Prior to reaching this farm I walked round a grassy field and along the vehicle track to the weather radar station. The trig point was located beyond this dome shaped construction but was in a dip so the surrounding ground was higher.

South-east of Auchnagatt was Logan Hill. I parked at the side of the minor road to the south at the start of the farm track leading to Mains of Elrick. I walked north up this track and beyond the farm buildings entered and crossed a stubble field to reach the summit of this Tump although the actual high point couldn’t be determined.

The final hill, the Tump, Hill of Dens, was located north-east of Auchnagatt. I left my vehicle off the minor road to the north-west, crossed a gate and a couple of fields then entered an area where the trees had been harvested. A grassy track with some brash was followed to the summit area which consisted of gorse and trees. After some time searching I located the trig point which was concealed by a tree.
