Achgarve north of Laide

On a dreich day in the North-West Highlands headed to Laide on the A832 Braemore Junction to Gairloch Road then north on the single-track Mellon Udrigle Road parking on the grassy verge at its junction with the minor road to Achgarve.

In the rain crossed the Achgarve Road, went through a stock gate, across a field holding sheep and lambs, then via a second gate onto the open hillside. Walked over the rough heathery vegetation onto the Tump, Meallan Udrigill. Visited a couple of highpoints although the cairn appeared to be the summit.

Headed off in a westerly direction, crossed a field of rough grazing and its surrounding stock fence topped with barbed wire, twice, as the rain eased. This led to large areas of swampy ground avoided by locating slightly less wet or higher ground, finally climbing in windy conditions onto the summit of the Tump, Meall na h-Airighe Riabhaich, marked by a large boulder.

Returned east, north of the ascent route, then ENE, rough going, locating the vehicle track shown on the map south-west of Achgarve. This little used uneven track led to this hamlet then a road walk of around 600 metres back to the car.

  • Time taken – 2 hours 25 minutes.
  • Distance – 5.5 kilometres.
  • Ascent – 145 metres.
