West of Ben More, Isle of Mull

On the second hill day on the Isle of Mull I headed west of Ben More along the B8035 Salen to Glen More Road parking at the entrance to an old quarry near the highpoint above Gleann Seilisdeir and south of the Allt Chreaga Dubha.

Leaving the car, I walked north-east on short dry vegetation later coming across a grassy ATV track in reasonable condition except for a short rough section through outcrops.

The track turned east and higher on the hillside disappeared. I aimed for a break in the crags then at a second band easily bypassed them to the left. It was then a short walk to the cairn marking the summit of the Marilyn, Coirc Bheinn.

The descent NNW then NW was across some stony ground before making the easy climb onto A’ Mhaol Mhor. The highest point of this Tump was an outcrop north of the large cairn.

I left this summit initially heading south sticking to the higher ground before descending south-west through rough vegetation to cross the B8035 north-west of the Allt Chreaga Dubba keeping away from the cattle feeding nearby.

I continued in a south-westerly direction, initially easy going before the gradient increased as I headed for a break in the crags. It was now hard work in the heat, sunny with no clouds or breeze. Higher up another band of crags was passed to the south before heading for the summit of the Marilyn, Beinn na Sreine, marked by a cairn.

The descent north-west took me through some more crags, the ground was stony in places, before making the easy ascent of the Tump, Fionna Mhaim, marked by a cairn.

There were couple of Tumps out to the west but a bit too far to add to this outing, so I descended ESE then SE below Beinn na Sreine trying to stay high. Once south-west of Coire nan Dearcag climbed Meall Mheadhonach, the summit of this Tump marked by a rock.

Descended to above Coire nan Dearcag but it was tricky finding a route through or round the numerous crags and time consuming. Beyond there was longish heather to contend with before reaching Creag na Comhla and an old deer fence beside the trees, some had been harvested. A gorge containing the Allt Chreaga Dubba prevented a direct return to the car so a short diversion was required to get there.
