Glen Carron

The plan was to climb the Graham, Carn Breac, using the path to the east of the Allt Coire Dubh-riabhach shown on my map as starting just to the west of Glencarron Lodge. We parked on the south side of the A890 Achnasheen to Lochcarron Road just west of the Lodge but despite a search for the start of the path the area was overgrown with rhododendrons with no trace of it.

We found a point a little further west to access the open hillside crossing a rusty fence, passing through some small trees and heather to locate what appeared to be the remnants of a path although it disappeared at times. On approaching the Allt Coire Dubh-riabhach there were several tracks but most of them appeared to be used by the deer that were watching us from higher up.

The track zigzaged a bit as per the map then disappeared again so we ended up beside a wee stream and followed its grassy banks onto the almost level east ridge of Aonach Dubh. An easy walk led to the summit of this knoll with good views down Coire Dubh-riabhach.

From there we descended north-west through a few boulders before swinging north-east and ascending Carn Breac across a mixture of vegetation. On reaching the trig point and shelter there were some good views especially of the Torridon mountains.

The actual summit of this Graham was off to the east so we headed out to its highest point.

We later returned to below Aonach Dubh and crossed its west ridge then descended the west side of Coire Dubh-riabhach. Lower down the east edge of the forest was followed with an area churned up by deer. Otherwise it was a relatively easy descent to the A890 to beside the bridge over the Allt Coire Dubh-riabhach.
